ARTIST RESIDENCY
OPEN APPLICATION 2023/24 - ESSAOUIRA, MOROCCO
THIS IS A CALL TO ACTION FOR ARTISTS AROUND THE WORLD.
EACH MONTH WE SELECT 2 ARTISTS TO STAY FOR 1 WEEK
The application is open to all people involved in artistic projects, without a limit of age (but +18). The artists that apply will be free to stay and manage their project as they feel, with no schedule. As an artist, you can enjoy the inspiration that comes from the city and its surroundings. We aim to create experiences that ‘leave a track’, beneficial to the artist, Essaouira, and its inhabitants. During this week, Waxaw is the ‘careful host’, being the link between the artist and the potential activities/events to organize.
We can consider a longer stay: please let us know in advance your proposal in order to evaluate it.
Each artist can bring a +1 (either your partner, a friend, or your colleague): see the admission fee and costs below.

This is a non-binding application form: you can use this tool to tell us about yourself and schedule a call to get to know each other. The residency will be booked after your confirmation.
ADMISSION FEES AND COSTS
RESIDENCY FEE
FEE for 7 days 600 €
FEE for an additional person is 40 € per day ( MAX 1 EXTRA PERSON PER APPLICATION )
Included: Private studio room with terrace, breakfasts, dinners, laundry room, meditation/meeting room, Fiber Wifi, huge and fully equipped kitchen with annex dining room, cozy terrace with ocean view.
In addition to the standard features, we also offer a range of extra services to enhance your stay with us. These include:
Airport transfer
One-day tour in Marrakech with a personal guide and photographer
Two days in the Merzouga Desert at Sandfish Resort
Massages in our Meditation Room
Photo and Video shooting for a personal project
We won’t select based on your skills or style, as we believe that artists (and art in general) shouldn’t fulfill any standard. Our ‘approval’ will depend mostly on availability from October 2023 to December 2024.
Upon your application, we’ll get in touch via email within 3 working days to ask you some questions and then schedule a video call: at this point, we’ll get to know each other and discuss the details of your stay/project.
Once everything is settled, you have to pay a fee of €150 to confirm the booking (this fee is refundable until 2 months before your arrival).
You can bring a + 1 (partner, colleague, friend) who will share the room with you for an additional cost of € 40/day. Any other request (e.g. booking of an extra room) needs to be discussed in advance and will have different additional costs.
Only adults (+18) can apply. Please check on the law in force in both your country and Morocco before booking with us.
Any cost not included in our program is borne by the applicant.
Please let us know if you need the transfer from Marrakech or Agadir so we can arrange the meeting with our driver (at extra cost).
ABOUT THE CITY
The Old Medina of Essaouira was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage in 2001.
In this place, art and history, together with the people who came here, gave birth to a magical atmosphere and a peaceful way of living. From Orson Welles (who resided in the Medina) to Jimi Hendrix (who was looking for the origin of the blues), including Pink Floyd among others, the flow of the artists who arrived and lived in the ‘belle ville’ has been unstoppable.
